Halloweened

I am in the basement editing Aszure.  Falling for the blurs.  Videochat this morning in the yellow leaves with Jackson putting on a two foot shuffle for his grandparents at Duke.  Was down the street on my wireless connection when I realized how far our connection reaches.   Music loud in the basement.   Have not told you about my Sonos and Rhapsody obsessions – Conor Oberst on down here, Elaine Stritch upstairs with applesauce cooking, further up is some “King and I” for Jackson, further up Stephie has the new Lucinda Williams, further up is the sky.  Finally music everywhere.

Wearing the orange shoes I bought in a strange moment.   In Seattle waiting for Stephie, wore brightest orange leather shoes around the store.   Toes too square.  Color is halloween acid orange.   Thought I could pull them on and off.   Only today.  Maybe.

A random note from Ireland to keep this up.  A note from Griffin to make it all work.  A note from Julie to follow up with Vickie.  With all the contractions I keep reminding myself that in the end I am a storyteller.   Still pictures, animated pictures and audio, words.  Iphones, printed pages, cinema screens, gallery walls. Stories to tell.

Have updated all the portfolios on the site, moving some around as we speak.  Updating the downloads.  Updating the blogs (both of them).  New printed portfolios.  Updated our way of thinking everyday.  Hopefully updating the way you see me.

Still feeling that anything older than the last ten minutes is ancient history.

Next Spring at the White House

Got a call to photograph the Obama’s early in the summer. Was so totally excited to get that call. Told Michelle Obama I had never had so many people wanting to carry my bags. Was warned from my client that I should not “gush” or appear in anyway “partisan”. Told them I was the wrong man if that is what they wanted. Still got the job. Grew up a good liberal in Pittsburgh huddled under Natalie Meyer’s big fur coat with the “Don’t Eat Grapes” label sewn on the inside. I am totally partisan with everyone I shoot. And I gush! I glorify my subjects. Cannot shoot subjects I do not totally believe in. Halfway through the shoot I told the Obama’s, “I have not been to the White House in 8 years since I don’t photograph Republican politicians.” I paused and then declared, “And I am planing to go next spring!” Barack laughed said, “Come on!” I think it might be time to add to the dictionaries on our computers: “Barack” and “Obama.”

Go On Dare

goondare.jpg

Saw that sign this morning at the pool and could relate. Got my blog chops reignited writing in the guest book of my father in law’s blog the past week. Have been writing under Jackson’s name. Love thinking about what might be in his head. Posting my entries on Bigger Than Yesterday.

Went to PhotoExpo in NY last Friday. When I saw the queue of people lined up at the Kodak booth to get the free film they were handing out, I knew I might not be at the right place. Saw mugs and beach towels and tatoos you can put your pictures on. Met someone who last saw me shoulder deep in the Dead Sea barely balancing my Leaf camera over my head. Hugged Ari Briggs, one of my favorite people. Ari runs marketing for Leaf in Tel Aviv, and could not help me with my yiddish.

So here we are. Listening to Steve Earle, who we saw a couple of weeks ago at a church in the Village. He ended the show telling the audience, “Don’t fuck up!” And everyone knew that meant something we all need to do behind a closed curtain next week. I have been wearing my Obama hat everyday for 6 months now, thinking about how good this country is going to feel about itself on November 5th. Read Stanley Fish this morning, and I think he gets the big picture, which is the kind of picture I want to hang on my wall.
