LAST 10 MINUTES

Monthly Archives: January 2011

This will get you everywhere

Got this note from my friend, Craig Bamsey at Fathom + Hatch this morning. We had a big, long overdue catchup meeting earlier this week with his partner Kat Lam.  The most fun is playing ping pong with ideas against people who can keep the ball in play, and sometimes slam the ball right in your face.

“I am both flattered and thrilled that you enjoyed yourself, for indeed, I am endlessly inspired by your visits. I do think we share many basic values and perspectives – but our lenses are different (which makes for wonderful variety), and I have few doubts that you are far more courageous and adventurous than I when it comes to exploring the boundaries and whims those perspectives supply. You have a truly awesome bee-line to the beauty in life, and to how its tendrils infect and bind us all from the everyday to the extraordinary. I left our meeting refreshed and energized – and like you, wondering actively how to get us working together!”

(This image is from the “Kiss” section on the upcoming ipad app.  Aszure brought her friend Claudio into the studio. Claudio is a post-modern Brazilian clown often seen performing with Cirque De Soleil.)

Step Right Up – Our new website is ALIVE!

This is our new flagship store with all the new merch on display.   All decked out for you to explore, poke, and knock around.   Finally got away from categories and created case studies with deep dives.  Got the videos ready for prime time.   The blogs both cooking and linking to our Facebook page (Langestudio).    Dared to put the Glenn Beck project online – you can see it here and read about it when you hit Dive Deeper.   I especially love the audience section in the Glenn Dive Deeper section.    Also love how it relates with the soccer shots on the Jeni’s deep dive.

The site was developed by our whole staff – with Monswoon.  Many thanks to Griffin Waldau and Ava Savitsky whose infinite patience allowed us to tweak and pull this thing together.  Thanks to Stephie whose keen eye plugged the holes and kept the ball rolling.

In the process we changed our name to Lange Studio.   We feel like photography is only one piece of the artillery – and wanted our name to reflect that.  Also to acknowledge that our whole staff – Sybil, David, Jeremy, Monika, Stephie, and host of freelancers – all have their hand in the pie and all get credit now that it is out of the oven on the windowsill.

Would love to hear feedback – the good and the bad.   The studio email is: studio@langestudio.com.     The ipad app companion piece we built from scratch arrives at the itunes store in a couple of weeks.  Stay tuned.

John Cohen’s Hat

“I said there’s a side of ourselves that goes out trying to change the world to our own image, and there’s another side of ourselves trying to find our image in the outside world,” he says. “I think it’s that second one that’s forced me to become who I am.”

The Party Ain’t Over

Friday.  Vitamin D pouring in the house.   The bouncy house  deflated in the parlor. Jeremy, Cecelia and Stephie are drunk with ideas working on collage animations. They are playing with string, flour, alphabets, and some of our favorite pictures.  The music playing is the new Wanda Jackson cd  “The Party Ain’t Over” – produced by Jack White. (Wanda is a rockabilly queen from the Elvis era.  The real deal.  I hate anything retro.  This feels alive…ALIVE!)  Wanda is cranked loud – and the vibration is hopefully helping Asher’s morning nap.  Monika – our organizational czar – has wrangled the chaos that always looms all around us into submission.   Sybil is setting up a new still & video shoot for Allyson Torrisi  in LA.   I never leave a shoot with Allyson without a boot mark on my ass and a big hug.  Need them both.

Our new website will launch officially on Monday.  Unofficially…..it is up now at: www.langestudio.com Would love to hear what you think.

Jeni Britton of Jeni’s ice cream called me yesterday out of the blue.   I listened on the phone as she saw the site for the first time and hollered out, “I love her eating upside down!”  Jeni’s is a featured case study on the home page.  Jeni is like Wanda -the real deal.  She creates ice cream like Tom Waits sings the blues….all soul and dreams.

Lots in the next two weeks.   Get your ipads ready!

Everything is connected – Wrong City

Stephie bought this great dress at Paul Smith in New York for a wedding we were going to attend in Santa Barbara.   At the last minute I had to go to London to shoot for Microsoft while Stephie and Jackson went to the wedding.  The Saturday morning of the wedding I had off and was wandering around Borough Market in London, particularly sad I was in the wrong city that day.   At one point I looked down an alley that was empty, but there seemed to be an interesting shop at the end, so I went down to see.  As I got closer to the shop, I saw a mannequin outside the shop wearing the exact same dress Stephie was wearing that day at the wedding in Santa Barbara.  It was a little Paul Smith shop that looked like a hidden jewel.  I rambled back to the market and tried one of those coffees.
