LAST 10 MINUTES print heading

LAST 10 MINUTES

Home

I am coming home. After 16 days away. After talking about Creativity to everyone at the Discovery Network in Silver Spring. After portraits of Kay Krill, the head of Ann Taylor in NY. After shooting everyone at The Blaze and my friend Glenn who I finally channeled Welles with. After directing a video for Merrill Lynch in a frigid Minneapolis (thank you John who insisted I do what I do). Did a turn on the Today show back in NY. Then today finished up with all my friends at Cardinal Health – especially Christine Kullberg. I had one day in NY where I had 2 breakfasts, 2 dinners, another 4 meetings and a little shooting. I got to stay at the most deluxe digs in the city with Kay Unger. I am coming back home with my head spinning. Most linear thoughts upended. Believing more than ever in what I believe. Pondering the truth in the couple of bad reviews. Feeling heat at my tail. World is spinning very fast. Faster than we know. Faster than we can imagine.

Making a list of the reasons to believe.

This shot was from a quick shooting with Cherice Barton and Jeremy Jurinand Summer one morning before I was awake. Signing off here in Columbus with Tom Wait’s acceptance speech: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9laF_joukQs

There are hugs waiting in Boulder with opens arms. I am almost home.3.10

After the Today Show

After doing the Today show, I went back out on the street where they are packing up the outdoor carnival for the show they put on everyday in Rockefeller Center. The skaters are starting to fill up the rink. I am wanting to find the nearest Le Pain Quotidien with Stephie and let go of everything but her. I need some good gluten. The saleswoman asks if it has hit me yet. (I am not really the kind of person that gets off on the spotlight). The publisher tells me sales have jumped 7009%. (hello top 50 at Amazon, have not seen you in a little while). Most of the feedback is about the green pants I was sporting thanks to a Liquor Store that J. Crew now inhabits. My mother’s phone in Pittsburgh is very busy – but she still sneaks out to yoga. Tonight I watched the replay in Kay Unger’s bedroom. It fit nicely between all the pillows and the Warhol butts. #shootyourlife3.8

The Today Show

My 3 year old son, Asher was watching me on the Today show in Boulder this morning and kept looking at the screen and asking, “Why won’t Daddy talk to me?” Super fun, but like speed dating…not that I would know what that was like. #shootyourlife #todayshow — at Today Show 3.7.14.

Creativity at Discovery

I am so lucky to get the kindest notes after venturing out on the other side of the lens. This is one of the sweetest ones from my talk at the Creative Speaker series at Discovery in Silver Spring yesterday. I met Elizabeth Bakacs through my new Boulder neighbor, and (possibly new friend) Grant Bessler.

Elizabeth wrote: Thank you for sharing your photography, your stories and your perspective on creativity today at Discovery. The work you do for us is gorgeous, as is your personal photography. But moreover I was inspired by the lens through which you look at WHY you work and WHAT being a human being brings TO your work.
I love your stories about side streets and inside stairwells, holding hands and trust, appreciation and love. I love that you use the word love so freely.

Thank you for sharing. And please continue to put love out in the world!

The pictures are of Karen R Smith before the talk, and then one Karen took during the Q&A with James Gilbey. James was so amazing to talk with. Karen always the best.2.25a 2.25b

Texting and Driving and One Headlight

I got a text last night that a friend was going to pick me up on Fenton St outside the hotel, across from the Whole Foods in Silver Spring. I went down to wait and got a text. “there in 3 minutes” Got another text, “driving a BMW with one headlight.” Got another text about 5 minutes later, “almost there.” I texted back, “ARE YOU TEXTING AND DRIVING?” Then Dan pulled around the corner. — with Dan Cavey.2.24
