Ali for Sports Illustrated by Gregory Heisler05
Ali did not become the greatest by thinking of himself as "sort of" the greatest. He was not called "sort of" the greatest in his lifetime, or now that he is gone. Why does Mitch McConnell have such a hard time uttering the words "the greatest" without a qualifier? Why does Kentucky native McConnell on NBC’s Meet the Press this morning, when asked about Ali respond, “He sort of moved beyond some of the controversial positions he took on early in life and he sort of became the most interesting man in the world.” McConnell is so "sort of" pathetic. What made Ali so great is that he had such clarity about who he was, had the courage to stand so bravely, and not have an ounce of "sort of" anywhere in him.
